Cable theft

By Peter Vickery on Wed, 14 Mar 2012 at 07:58

Hi all - we had an attempted cable theft in our road, early last year and an outage the following day as a result. Fortunately there was no damage to any appliances and the like.
I understand that the cable thieves disconnect the neutral wire and this causes a voltage surge of 380 volts downstream, which destroys any appliances on that circuit, that are plugged in and switched on at the time.
We called in our regular electrician and he recommended that we fit a unit to the mains supply in our substation, that cuts supply to the complex in the event of any variance (over or under) within specified parameters.
Cost R 6,000.00 and money well spent.

regards

Peter
